Civil Engineering Master’s Students of UMS Conduct Field Visit to Semarang–Demak Toll Road Project

Semarang — The Master of Civil Engineering Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) conducted a field visit to the Semarang–Demak Toll Road Construction Project on Monday, January 20, 2025. The visit was attended by students, lecturers, and academic staff as part of experiential learning to strengthen field-based understanding.

The Semarang–Demak Toll Road is one of Indonesia’s national strategic projects, aimed at improving connectivity in Central Java while also serving as a coastal sea wall to mitigate tidal flooding (rob) in the northern coastal areas of Semarang and Demak. The project is executed by PT Hutama Karya (Persero), a leading state-owned construction company with extensive experience in large-scale infrastructure development.

During the visit, students received a direct presentation from PT Hutama Karya’s project team, who explained the construction processes, the advanced technologies applied, and the technical as well as environmental challenges faced in the field. The students also had the opportunity to observe key project points, including toll road structures and coastal protection systems.

This activity is part of the Master Program’s commitment to providing contextual and practical learning experiences that are closely aligned with industry needs. Beyond enriching students’ academic perspectives, such field visits also foster collaboration between higher education and the construction industry.

Through this visit, students are expected not only to strengthen their theoretical knowledge but also to gain a real-world understanding of how civil engineering principles are applied in national infrastructure projects.
